Groups of 15 or more must schedule their tour in advance. Can’t make it to our site or don’t have time to take a guided tour? Through a collabration with Google Arts and Culture, it is now possible to take a virtual tour through the Lincoln Home.
In addition to tours of the Lincoln Home, visitors can browse several self-guided exhibits, watch a short film at our visitor center, and walk around our historic 4-block neighborhood. We have a junior ranger program for kids and in the summer, our site holds special events and historic reenactors. Please see our Things to Do page and our Events Calendar for more information on what you can do at our site. Visitors will get a glimpse into Lincoln’s life as a family man, as well as explore his rise as a successful lawyer and politician through the context of the Lincoln Home.

Abraham Lincoln believed in the ideal that everyone in America should have the opportunity to improve their economic and social condition. Free tickets for the Lincoln Home tour can be reserved at the visitor center on the day of the visit. Groups of 15 or more must schedule their tour in advance with the Springfield Convention Visitor’s Bureau. Explore the historic neighborhood where Abraham Lincoln and his family lived for 17 years.
Enjoying Lincoln Home NHS
Twenty-five miles from Springfield, Lincoln spent 6 years of his life in New Salem. Costumed interpreters help to bring frontier life of the early 1830s alive for visitors. During the summer, Theatre in the Park performs regularly scheduled outdoor performances. New Salem is in a 700-acre park with a restaurant and camping available. The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices are a state historic site located within walking distance of the Lincoln home in downtown Springfield, Illinois.
In 1861, Abraham Lincoln left his home of 17 years – the only home he ever owned – to serve as the 16th President of the United States. The Lincoln Home has been completely restored to its 1860 appearance and reveals much about Lincoln as husband, father, neighbor and politician. Tours of this national treasure are conducted by National Park Service Rangers. Free tickets are required for house tours and may be obtained at the Lincoln Home Visitors Center – which also houses a scaled model of 1860 Springfield. A variety of historic exhibits are located throughout the four-block neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln Home and can be viewed on a self-guided basis.
Research/Library Visit
Groups of 15 or more wishing to go on a tour of the Lincoln Home can do so free of charge, but must schedule their visit in advance. Please click here to go to our Fees & Passes page for more information. Of the Lincoln House much more than our $12 + parking visit to the Lincoln Museum. Lincoln Tomb is a state historic site where Lincoln and his family are buried, with the exception of Robert. Any intoxicated guest who interferes with other guests, or the operation of the tour, will be barred from the tour. Visitors can purchase an America the Beautiful Pass at our Visitor Center Front Desk.

Our house is roughly 180 years old and to keep our house in good condition, we are only able to accommodate roughly 15 individuals per tour. Hundreds of thousands of people visit our site every year. Thus please be aware that during our busy season, wait times to go on a tour of the Lincoln Home can exceed one hour. From Charleston take the Lincoln Highway Road to the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. “Goosenest Prairie Farm” was the last home site of Lincoln’s father and stepmother. The site includes a living history farm, displaying 1840s farming methods by costumed interpreters and the Stephen Sargent Farm, a second farmstead on the same property.
There is a $2 per hour per vehicle fee to park in the Lincoln Home NHS parking lot. Parking can be paid for at the Visitor Center front desk. Visitors are asked to please pay with credit or debit card. This exhibit focuses on the neighbors of the Lincoln family and the restoration and archeology of other houses in the historic Lincoln neighborhood. This exhibit focuses on Abraham Lincoln, the family, and changes of the Lincoln Home during the time the Lincoln family lived there.
The public is welcome to walk around the streets of the historic Lincoln neighborhood surrounding the Lincoln Home from dawn till dusk. Tickets are given on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be received in-person, on the day of one’s visit at the Visitor Center.
An America the Beautiful pass covers and/or reduces the entrance and amenity fees at different National Park and Federal Recreational Lands. It does not apply to parking fees in the Lincoln Home Parking lot. When driving down 7th street, our parking lot is located on the left-hand side after passing the Visitor Center. Individual visitors should not park in the parking lot located north of our Visitor Center, as this lot is for buses and oversized vehicles (e.g. RVs) only. This museum is the only one in Illinois that retraces the debates. The tour includes exhibits, interactive displays and a film. The museum also includes hands on children’s activities and a gift shop.
The Lincoln Home is a national historic site located in a four-block area that includes the only home that Lincoln ever owned, including several restored buildings with exhibits. The program, which includes participation from 10 central Illinois communities, is developed based on the stories of Abraham Lincoln's life and times throughout the area.
